Worden Hall on Worden Lane is the one couples ask me about most since its restoration reopened it: the Barn Room is licensed for civil ceremonies of up to 80 guests, seats 80 for a wedding breakfast and takes 120 in the evening, with the courtyard atrium and clocktower bar included. Charnock Farm on Wigan Road and Farington Lodge on Stanifield Lane cover the two ends of the scale, farm-shed informality and Georgian hotel formality, within four miles of each other.
Push further out and the choice widens: Penwortham Golf Club on Blundell Lane, Beeston Manor at Hoghton, and Samlesbury Hall, the Garner Hotel and the Macdonald Tickled Trout all along Preston New Road. I cover every one of them, and charge travel to none of them.
Leyland has no register office of its own, which surprises a lot of couples. The two nearest are Devonshire House on Devonshire Road in Chorley and the Lancashire Rose Suite on Bow Lane in Preston. For anything held at a licensed venue, the registrar travels to you instead — worth knowing when you are working out how much of the morning you actually need.
Worden Park is the reason Leyland is easy to photograph. Sixty-odd hectares of meadow, woodland and playing field, a walled garden that dates to 1777, and a hornbeam puzzle maze laid out in the 1850s by William Andrews Nesfield with a lime tree standing at the middle of it. That is four completely different backdrops without asking anybody to get back in a car, which matters more than it sounds: the portraits that work are the short ones, taken while your guests are still on the drinks.
Beyond the park there is Cuerden Valley Park on the Bamber Bridge side, and the field edges and hedgerows around Ulnes Walton and Croston. Leyland grew up around the motor works, too, so the brick and signage near King Street give a harder, more graphic frame if green is not your thing. I plan two options for every wedding: one that needs good weather, one that does not.
