Maternity photography, Lancashire

When to do it, and what it costs

Maternity sessions are priced on enquiry . outdoors or at home, anywhere in Lancashire. The usual window is 28 to 34 weeks. By then the bump is unmistakable. You are also, for most people, still comfortable enough to walk about and enjoy it. Leave it much later and standing for an hour stops being fun.

If you are expecting twins, come earlier. Everything arrives sooner and you will thank yourself. Whenever you book, get the date in the diary early, because the last month of pregnancy is a bad time to be arranging anything.

On the day

What actually happens

Not much, and that is the point. We meet, we walk, we talk. I give you small things to do rather than poses to hold. Walk towards me. Stop and look at each other. Put a hand where you can feel the kicking.

Then I get out of the way and photograph what happens next. Nobody has to arrange their face. About half the session tends to be you on your own, and the rest with your partner or your other children. We do the children's part first, while they still care.

An hour is enough. If you need to sit down, we sit down. If you are cold, we go inside. There is no schedule.

Getting ready

What to wear

The rule is simple. Fitted beats floaty. Fabric that follows the bump shows it; fabric that hangs off it hides it.

  • Stretchy, plain fabrics. Jersey, ribbed knits, anything that skims.
  • A long dress if you have one. It moves beautifully in even a light breeze.
  • Avoid large patterns and slogans. They fight the shape you came to photograph.
  • Bring two outfits, one plain and one you love. We will use both.
  • Comfortable shoes for the walking, and something warm for between frames.

Partners look best in plain colours from the same palette. Nothing has to match.

Where and when

Good places, good light

Outdoors, the hour before sunset does most of the work. Low sun is kind, and it comes at a civilised time from March to October. Worden Park in Leyland, Cuerden Valley Park and the lanes of the Ribble Valley are all easy, level and close to parking, which matters at 32 weeks.

In winter, do it at home. A big window on an overcast day gives soft, even light, and you can have a cup of tea halfway through. Some of the quietest, best maternity pictures I have taken were made three feet from a radiator.

Your gallery arrives well inside the six weeks I promise for weddings, delivered online with 15% off prints and albums. Most people book a newborn session at the same time, since that one needs to happen in the first fortnight. Later on there are family sessions, a first-birthday cake smash and couples shoots. Good to know

Maternity session questions

When should I book a maternity shoot?

Most people go between 28 and 34 weeks. The bump is clearly there by then, and you are usually still comfortable enough to walk about for an hour. If you are expecting twins, come earlier. Book the date itself well ahead, because late pregnancy is not the time to be chasing a diary.

How much is a maternity session?

Maternity sessions are priced on enquiry . That covers the shoot and a full gallery of edited images. Nothing is charged per photograph.

What should I wear for maternity photos?

Fitted, stretchy fabrics that follow the shape of the bump. Loose or floaty tops hide it. A long jersey dress works well because it moves in the wind. Plain colours beat patterns. Bring two options and we will use both.

Can my partner and my other children come?

Yes, and I would encourage it. Half the session can be just you, and the rest with whoever else is in the picture. Older children usually last about twenty minutes, so we do their part first.

Do we shoot outdoors or at home?

Either. Outdoors is lovely in the hour before sunset from spring to autumn. At home is warmer, calmer and better in January, and window light in your own front room is more than enough.

I feel self-conscious. Will that show?

Almost everyone says this. It is why I do not stand you in front of a camera and ask you to pose. We walk, we talk, I give small prompts, and I photograph what happens between them. The pictures that work are the ones where you were not thinking about the lens.
